Cobleskill assessments down, budget up

The Town of Cobleskill’s first-draft budget for 2011 shows a $4 million loss in assessments, in part due to the still-vacant Guilford Mills property.
That means the amount to be raised by taxes in the $1,569,291 budget is up by 6.7 percent.
Taxes are projected to increase 39 cents to $4.30 per $1,000 for townwide residents and 57 cents to $6.73 per $1,000 for outside-village residents.
The budget is up $12,000 over last year’s--less than a one percent increase; anticipated revenue is down almost seven percent.
The total amount to be raised by taxes is $1,180,996, compared to last year’s 1,106,687.
Supervisor Tom Murray distributed the budget to Councilmen Sherwood Veith and Ryan McAllister at a meeting Friday; Councilmen Tim Purcell and Ken Hotopp were out of town.
Budget discussions will continue at the town’s October 12 meeting and again on the 14th.
Most of the individual budget increases are slight and across the board.
Budgeted salaries include: Supervisor, $6,578; justices, $5,431 each; councilmen, $2,334 each; clerk/collector, $37,032; and highway superintendent, $45,000, a decrease from the $55,603 budgeted for that position in January.
