CFD Fire Prevention open house Saturday

10/5/2010

The Cobleskill Fire Department will mark Fire Prevention Week, October 4-9, with a series of events, all with the theme, “Beep, Beep—A Sound You Can Live With,” promoting smoke alarm awareness.
Throughout the week, volunteers will visit local elementary school schools, Head Start, and the SUNY Cobleskill Day Care Center to teach the youngsters there fire safety.
The children will also learn about “Stop, Drop and Roll,” learn how to practice fire drills in their homes, and get hands-on demonstrations of firefighting gear and equipment.
Saturday’s open house, 10-3 at the Cobleskill Fire House, will be the most eventful ever.
The New York State Office of Fire Prevention and Control will be bringing a fire extinguisher demonstration trailer for adults to practice with.
There will be an opportunity for children and adults to try on firefighting gear as well as hands-on opportunities to use a fire hose, a bucket-brigade race, a firefighting clown, and other activities to encourage fire prevention and safety.
There will be free fire prevention literature and give-aways, Smokey the Bear will be on hand and there will be a kids’ bounce house.
The CFD’s equipment will be on display and there will be Jaws-of-Life extrication demonstrations at 10:45am and 12:15am.
A car-seat safety check will be conducted by the New York State Police from 10am-noon and the Cobleskill Police Department will hold a child fingerprint clinic from 2-3pm.
The Cobleskill Rescue Squad will be offering free CPR demonstrations and displays of their ambulance and equipment; weather-permitting, the Life-Net/Medflight helicopter will also be on display.
