NYT reporter to speak on oil spill

10/13/2010

The New York Times journalist John Broder will speak at SUNY Cobleskill on Thursday, October 14 at 7pm in Bouck Auditorium.
Mr. Broder’s lecture, “How the Oil Spill Killed the Climate Bill,” focuses on two major topics that have been prominent in this year’s news – the proposed climate and energy bill that died in the Senate, and the BP oil spill.
Mr. Broder will express his opinions on how the intense focus – both in Congress and by the current presidential administration – on the crisis in the Gulf of Mexico helped doom the broader energy and climate package. In addition, he plans to speak to future prospects for the American government addressing climate change and how offshore drilling will change as a result of the accident.
Mr. Broder is a correspondent in the Washington Bureau of The New York Times, currently covering environment and energy policy. He previously served as Los Angeles bureau chief, responsible for coverage of California, Nevada, Arizona and Hawaii. Before that, he was Washington editor and deputy bureau chief.
In earlier assignments, Mr. Broder covered the White House, the Pentagon, the Intelligence community, banking and finance. He has worked for the Los Angeles Times, the Detroit News and several smaller papers in the Midwest as a reporter and photographer.
The event, co-sponsored by the Student Government Association and the Office of Academic Affairs, is free and open to the public.
