MCS still undecided on additional admin

As the school year ends, Middleburgh Central School is still undecided on how to restructure its building administrators.
After a long discussion last week, it was agreed that Superintendent Michele Weaver would come back with a plan to add a part-time director of curriculum, and, if funds allow, an administrator for discipline.
Ms. Weaver said that the district has up to $50,000 to spend on the positions.
The main focus, she said, would be to add a part-time director of curriculum and instruction, and, if funds allow, add someone for discipline.
Board members discussed several scenarios last week.
It is not known whether someone from the MCS staff, a person outside the district or BOCES would be hired for the curriculum position or whether one or two dean of students would be hired.
Ms. Weaver said several times during the meeting that both a curriculum person and someone for discipline are needed.
“Absolutely, we need both,” she said.
Board President Kim Smith, who pushed for a director of curriculum to replace the retiring dean of students earlier this month, wondered Wednesday why both a dean and director of curriculum were needed.
Ms. Weaver said a discipline person is needed so someone would be there to handle problem immediately.
Ms. Smith noted that there are already administrators in the buildings.
“Who are tied up with evaluations,” Ms. Weaver answered.
Board member Bob Herodes said he was not sure how a director of curriculum would be helpful.
Ms. Weaver said a person is needed to oversee district-wide curriculum and to “pull all the pieces of curriculum together.”
Ms. Smith added that the director would help with the additional evaluations that are needed because of new standards.
“It’s the perfect time to get the process together so we’re ready to rock and roll next year,” she said.
Both positions are needed, Ms. Weaver said.
Administrators can do discipline, she said, “but do we want them tied up in discipline?”
The administrators also have to work on curriculum, instruction and evaluations, she said.
Ms. Weaver said one part-time dean could be added for grades six through 12 or there could be two part-time deans, one for grades six through eight and another for grades nine through 12.
“I truly believe we need assistance in that area,” she said.
Ms. Weaver said she would not recommend having a combination assistant principal and athletic director.
Schoharie added such a position for this fall.
