Village wants to charge for OT help

Two things that won't be in the Village of Cobleskill's 2012 budget:
Free police coverage for events like the Fourth of July celebration and free water and sewer for the Cobleskill Fairgrounds.
Mayor Mark Galasso said Tuesday that the village can no longer afford to subsidize either.
The village will continue to provide regular shift coverage for CPI events, the Fourth of July parade and fireworks, and the Fair, he said, but he wants to begin instituting a "fee for service" for overtime.
"If they're not willing, I'll come back to the board," he said, with the implication being that the OT coverage would be eliminated.
Also at issue is $47,135 the village has billed the Fairgrounds in water and sewer charges from 2009-11.
As part of a longstanding dispute, Fair officials maintain a gentlemen's agreement 100 years ago gave the village a right-of-way across the Fairgrounds in exchange for free water and sewer there.
The village maintains that no record of that agreement can be found and has begun billing for the services.
Because the Fairgrounds' bill remains unpaid, it will be turned over to the county, Mayor Galasso said; the county will make the village "whole."
"I will recommend we take a hard stance with the Fair," Mayor Galasso said. "We cannot afford to subsidize a county event. 'Pay or we're cutting you off. No water or sewer.'"
