More than 40 windows have been shot out of vehicles in the northern end of the county and police have leads and hope to have an arrest soon.
The shootings, which have been made with a high-powered BB gun or pellet gun, have been concentrated in the towns of Esperance, Carlisle and Sharon, said Schoharie County Sheriff Tony Desmond. There have also been incidents in the Town of Root in Montgomery County.
The area of Argusville Road in the Town of Sharon was particularly hard hit Thursday evening, he said.
Most of the shootings--there have been 42 incidents in all-have been on Route 20 and side roads off Route 20, the Sheriff said.
There were none reported over the weekend but there were shootings four of the five weekdays last week, Sheriff Desmond said.
Police have been working on several leads and meetings have been held with the State Police and officials from the Montgomery County Sheriff department, the Sheriff said.
The gun used in the shootings is not a firearm, Sheriff Desmond said, and no injuries have been reported. Thus far only vehicles and no homes have been targeted.
Most of the shootings have been reported in the mornings when people find that their vehicles have been damaged, he said. One woman said she heard a noise and went outside to find that her car had been damaged.
No one specifically has been targeted, police said.
"There is no rhyme or reason to it yet," said Cobleskill Trooper Robert Laporta on Friday.
More meetings are scheduled with the police agencies this week and Sheriff Desmond is hoping for a quick resolution to the case.
"We're hoping we get the right lead or right information and close this out," he said Monday.
He said residents should keep a close eye out on their road.
They should call police if they see a suspicious vehicle or one driving slowly down the road, he said. Many of the shootings have taken place on roads that are not highly traveled.
If someone sees an incident occurring, they should call 911, he said. If it is after the fact, they can call the Sheriff's office at 295-8114 or the State Police at 234-3131.
"We want people to keep an eye out and if they see anything if they have any information," he said.
To protect their vehicles, the Sheriff suggests that they do not park their vehicle close to the road and park as far back in their driveways as they can. The less noticeable a vehicle is from the road the better.
Rear and side windows have been shot out in the incidents.
Sheriff Desmond said the recent shootings may be connected with similar incidents in the towns of Middleburgh and Schoharie late last year.
