Persistence has paid off for hydrofracking opponents in the Town of Cobleskill.
Supervisor Tom Murray said Monday that David Slottje, the Ithaca-based environmental attorney who has helped towns, including Schoharie, use zoning to ban fracking, will be in Cobleskill Friday, June 29, for a 6pm meeting at the fire house.
The time is tentative, Mr. Murray said; check next week's Times-Journal to be sure.
Fracking opponents have been pressing Mr. Murray and councilmen to invite Mr. Slottje to speak on moratorium possibilities since at least March.
Oil and gas lease attorney Edward Zaengle of Worcester was the surprise speaker at a town-sponsored May 21 meeting on hydrofracking; though they said they aren't interested in a moratorium, Mr. Murray and councilmen promised then to formally ask Mr. Slottje to speak.
His presentation is expected to focus on the town's zoning laws and what protection they offer against fracking as well as what a moratorium could do and its legal benefits.
