Cobleskill wants to add road law to frack protection

The Town of Cobleskill's zoning looks like its solid when it comes to hydrofracking.
Still, a committee that includes Planning Board members Terry Keller and Bruce Wetsell and Councilmen Ryan McAllister and Sherwood Veith plans to continue reviewing the code and definitions to see whether any changes are necessary.
The ad hoc committee was formed after environmental attorney David Slottje's fracking presentation to them in June.
Mr. McAllister said the only activities permitted in various zones are those specifically listed in the code.
That would limit fracking to industrial zones and also possibly a planned development district.
It looks like the town is adequately protected, Mr. McAllister said, but Monday the committee directed the Planning Board to work with Highway Superintendent Mike Persons to draft a road preservation law.
The Town of Sharon last Wednesday adopted changes to its zoning code that effectively ban fracking. (See related story.)
Also, the Town of Richmondville has passed a one-year moratorium on natural gas exploration and extraction and the Town of Seward will hold a public hearing at 7pm Monday at the town barn to establish its own moratorium.
