No sanctions for Barbic

State Supreme Court Justice Eugene Devine levied no sanctions against Seward Supervisor Carl Barbic after closed-door talks with attorneys Friday.
Mr. Barbic with supporters Sandra Manko of Sharon, Phil Skowfoe of Fulton, Jim Buzon of Middleburgh, Gene Milone of Schoharie, and Mike Brandow of Conesville, waited about 20 minutes for the decision.
"Nothing," said Mr. Barbic's attorney, Mike Breen in announcing Judge Devine's ruling.
"No sanctions. It's all over. You can go."
The hearing stemmed from Judge Devine's August decision to dismiss a lawsuit by eight supervisors-those who supported Mr. Barbic in the courtroom along with Larry Bradt of Carlisle and Earl VanWormer of Esperance-against Chairman Harold Vroman for changing committee assignments mid-year, a move they had said was politically motivated.
In that decision, however, Judge Devine chastised Mr. Barbic for first voting against a resolution to appeal the committee changes and then joining in the lawsuit.
Judge Devine called Mr. Barbic's actions "frivolous," and said he could have prevented the lawsuit by voting in favor of the resolution.
The committees have since been returned to their original membership.
Mr. Barbic said Friday he was relieved by the Judge's decision to let the matter drop.
"I'm just glad it's over," he said.
