The Village of Sharon Springs has added two more grants to its "win" list.
"We're four-for-four," Trustee Doug Plummer said Thursday, as Mayor Omer Cousineau and trustees discussed the details of a $161,352 New York State Safe Routes to Schools grant the village has received for improving its sidewalks.
Grant winners were announced in January.
It's a reimbursement grant, which means the village must spend the money and then be reimbursed by DOT.
The grant includes $20,000 for an education component that will be handled by Sharon Springs Central School and funding for a solar-controlled sign that will let drivers know how fast they're going.
The village was also awarded a Community Arts Grant that will be used to paint a mural on the DPW building in Chalybeate Park as part of improvements there.
Artists Peter Cozzolino and Marguerite MacFarland will handle the job, which will feature an old-fashioned postcard of Sharon Springs emphasizing its agricultural and tourism backgrounds.
The work will begin in May and must be completed by the end of December.
Other improvements to Chaybeate Park include a fitness trail, also grant-funded.
A fourth grant recently helped the village install water meters for more accurate billing.
Some of those meters, however, have been running into trouble with "stuck" meters showing no water being used in possibly as many as a dozen spots, including SSCS.
The Badger meters are warranted for one year; the village will contact the manufacturer about getting the problem addressed.
"This could just be the tip of the iceberg," Mr. Plummer said. "They need to make this right."
