A new health center will rise where the former Eden Park Nursing Home now stands in Cobleskill.
The Bassett Network will build the center and move the longtime doctors' offices from the bottom of Legion Drive to the new facility.
The existing center has 12 doctors and advanced practice clinicians, and they've seen their patient visits jump from 16,5000 in 1987 to 30,000 or more, Bassett spokeswoman Karen Huxtable-Hooker said.
"It's an exciting project for the area, given the demonstrated need for additional primary care," she said.
As presented by Lamont Engineers to the Cobleskill Village Planning Board last week, the project would include a 22,000-square-foot single story building and parking for 75 cars.
The parking lot would be laid out similar to Eden Park's lot, according to meeting minutes, and the asphalt and sidewalk would be replaced.
The larger facility would encourage expansion, Ms. Huxtable-Hooker said.
"With the expanded space, we'll have room to add four additional providers at a minimum," she said.
"In addition to the providers, we will be hiring more support staff, including nurses and office staff."
Cobleskill Regional Hospital, which is part of the Bassett Network, bought the adjacent Eden Park several years ago after the nursing home closed.
Bassett purchased the property from Cobleskill Regional; terms were not disclosed.
Although the hospital isn't involved in the project, the new health center will be a boon.
"It really would benefit because of the number of providers and the proximity," said Eric Stein, hospital president and CEO.
"The ease of access would make it better for the community, better for us."
Already started, demolition of the nursing home is expected to be finished in May, Mr. Stein said.
Construction of the health center will begin after demolition and after planning board approval, Ms. Huxtable-Hooker said.
