Now that the 2012-13 school year is almost officially over, Schoharie school board members staffed the summer school last week.
Schoharie partnered with Berne-Knox for the past two summers but this year other students will be attending and the summer program will be run through BOCES. The classes will be at SCS.
School board members appointed several staff members to the summer school last week. Board members named:
• Debra Pelepzuck, Manuel Sousa, Cheryl Price, Holly Boss, Myrtle Bellinger, Pete Nethaway, and Timothy Grady as summer school bus drivers.
• Sharon Lamont as a summer bus aide.
• Pamela Guest as a summer teacher aide/assistant for Regents review.
• Donna Corey, Kelly Gannon, Denise LaBadia, Justin Langan, and Daniel Meyer as summer substitute custodial workers.
Classes to be offered are: English and math for grades six through eight; English and global studies for the ninth grade; pre-algebra and algebra and other credit recovery classes for the upper grades.
The summer school will be run 8am to noon from July 1 through August 12. The Regents will be held on August 13 and 14.
Last year, there were about 20 students attending from neighboring districts, according to Superintendent Brian Sherman. The approximate cost was about $250 per course. For SCS and Berne-Knox, students did not pay for summer school.
This year, since the two schools were still working together, they applied to BOCES for a Cooperative Service Agreement, which was approved by the state education department, Mr. Sherman added.
Under that plan, BOCES will now administer the program and hire the rest of the staff, Mr. Sherman said. The administration at SCS and Berne are full partners in selecting staff and administering the program.
