9th Rolphie Run raises $45,000 for kids

As they've done for years, riders in the Rolphie Run once again turned out for kids.
The ninth annual Rolphie Run on Saturday raised about $45,000 that will go to needy children in Schoharie County schools.
About 175 bikers, some with double riders, participated in the run, which started at the Cobleskill Fairgrounds, wound through Montgomery and Schenectady counties and returned to the Fairgrounds.
There, a chicken barbecue, music and partying finished off the day.
The Rolphie Runs is in memory of the late Rolph Karker and is organized by his family and friends.
In blessing the participants and the run before the start, Claude Falzarano, Mr. Karker's brother-in-law, urged all to ride safely and to remember that the day was dedicated to children.
"We try to emphasize that," Justin Karker, Mr. Karker's son, said afterwards. "When we read the thank-you letters we get from kids, we say, 'Wow, that's exactly why we do this.' "
An advocate in each of the county's six schools disperses the Rolphie funds, which go for health items, school supplies, college application fees, haircuts, eye glasses--anything kids need.
Justin Karker said organizers were pleased not only with the amount raised, but also with the spirit of the day.
"We had a great group of people," he said. "It was just a really positive experience, with everyone staying together."
Linda Karker, Mr. Karker's wife, agreed. She pointed out that donors and participants made the day a success.
"We live in a beautiful community, filled with caring, giving organizations and individuals," she said. "Our children will have better tomorrows because of their kind generosity."
