Summit Shock auction next Wednesday

8/12/2014

Summit Shock goes on the auction block next Wednesday, August 20.
The state Office of General Services will auction the former prison at 12:30pm in The Community Library in Cobleskill. Bidder registration is at 11:30am.
OGS has set the minimum bid at $95,000, which some may consider cheap for nearly 20 acres with almost 40 buildings on it.
Formerly called Camp Summit but actually in the Town of Fulton, Summit Shock is one of six state prisons Governor Cuomo closed as a cost-cutting move in 2011.
Since then, there's been interest from prospective buyers considering the site for summer camp for children, according to an OGS spokesman.
Potential sales didn't happen, so the prison is up for bidding.
The buildings were built from the early 1960s to the late 2000s, according to a state website. Included are a mess hall, dormitories, a wastewater treatment plant, water distribution system, auto and small-engine shops and oil- and wood-fired boilers.
If Summit Shock isn't sold at Wednesday's auction, OGS may hold a second auction in six months or a year, according to the OGS spokesman.
