A Cobleskill-Richmondville student has been charged with assault after striking an administrator, according to State Police.
Troopers said Josiah M. Holmes, 16 and a C-R high school student, was charged with third-degree assault and disorderly conduct after the incident last Wednesday.
Josiah and the administrator were having a routine discussion when the teen's behavior "became violent and threatening," according to C-R Superintendent Carl Mummenthey.
Josiah struck the administrator with a closed fist, troopers said.
After the punch was thrown, the two struggled, and the administrator injured his shoulder.
School officials called troopers, who took Josiah into custody. The administrator was treated and released at Cobleskill Regional Hospital.
During and immediately after the incident, the high school went into "shelter in place" mode, which meant that students stayed in classrooms they had been when the incident began.
"It wasn't a lockdown," Mr. Mummenthey said. "We kept kids in class, and instruction continued."
Through emails and phone calls, C-R notified all parents of high school students about the incident.
Mr. Mummenthey praised the school's response.
"Our staff implemented the proper protocol with great skill," he said.
"And the community can be reassured that our safety procedures worked."
Josiah was given an appearance ticket and released to a family member. He is to return to Richmondville Town Court today, Wednesday, at 4pm.
