More questions than answers remain after an apparent home invasion on Route 30 in Schoharie Saturday morning.
Police are conducting a manhunt for a man who entered an apartment in the Town of Schoharie Saturday.
Details from police are limited, but one person was injured after a man entered an apartment in a home on Route 30 shortly before 9am.
The man left on foot in an unknown direction and is being sought by the Schoharie County Sheriff's office and the State Police.
At 8:49am, the Sheriff's office received a 911 call of a home invasion involving a white man.
The man is described at being approximately 5'6" to 5'8" tall, average to stocky build, facial hair, wearing a ski mask, and wearing a blue hoodie and black pants, according to police.
Police received the description from the victim.
Rumors on social media were rampant for most of the day Saturday, but Sheriff Tony Desmond was able to give some information on the incident Monday morning. He declined to elaborate details, not wanting to hamper the ongoing investigation.
There are three apartments in the home just north of the Carrot Barn on Route 30. The man, Sheriff Desmond said, entered the apartment through the front door. Three people were home at the time.
No shots were fired and no weapon was reported as being displayed, he added.
One person was injured during the incident and was treated and released. Sheriff Desmond wouldn't give any more details about the person who was injured and declined comment on the motive for the home invasion.
No one saw a vehicle and it appears that the man left on foot, unless a vehicle was waiting for him further up the road, the Sheriff added.
A motorist, Sheriff Desmond continued, spotted a man who fit the description walking north on Route 30A Saturday morning.
There is nothing to indicate a statewide manhunt, Sheriff Desmond added.
"We're pointing toward Schoharie County and the area around Schoharie County."
Police do not know if the home invasion was a random act or if the man was targeting a specific person, according to Sheriff Desmond.
A press conference was held by police on Sunday afternoon, but little information was released until that time.
Sheriff Desmond explained that police had determined that the man was not a threat to the community.
It appears that the man was not someone who had escaped from a facility, he added.
The State Police set up a road block at the intersection of routes 443 and 30 Sunday morning asking passing motorists if they observed anyone fitting the man's description the day before.
Police had no solid leads as of Monday morning, Sheriff Desmond said.
Police are asking anyone who was traveling on Route 30 in Schoharie between the village and Exit 23 off I-88 and may have observed anyone fitting the man's description or has any information regarding the incident to contact the Sheriff's Tip Line at 518-295-2295 or the office at 295-8114.
Although the man is not believed to be a threat, the Sheriff's office and the State Police reminded residents to lock their doors.
In addition to the Sheriff's office, the incident is being investigated by the BCI units out of Duanesburg and Cobleskill, the Major Crime Unit out of Latham, and the Troop G forensics unit.
