A Cobleskill man died Monday after being struck by a car on Main Street Saturday night.
Edward Becker Jr., 55, was hit by a car while he was crossing Main Street by Pizza Shack at 5:47pm, according to Cobleskill Police Chief Rich Bialkowski.
He said the driver of the car, Denise Fortunato of North Babylon, who was eastbound, struck Mr. Becker as he was walking from the north side of the street to the south side.
"He was not in the crosswalk, and she apparently didn't see him," Chief Bialkowski said.
Witnesses said Mr. Becker may have been distracted and didn't see the car, Chief Bialkowski added.
Mr. Becker suffered head injuries and was taken to Cobleskill Regional Hospital for stabilization before being flown to Albany Medical Center.
Mr. Becker was listed in critical condition. He was taken off life support at the request of his family Monday evening, Chief Bialkowski said.
The investigation is continuing, but so far there have been no charges.
"On the face of it, right now it doesn't appear there will be charges," Chief Bialkowski said. "Alcohol and drugs were not factors. We don't think speed was a factor."
Main Street was blocked off for several hours while the State Police reconstructed the accident. The reconstruction may determine whether there will be charges, Chief Bialkowski said.
Although Main Street is unusually wide and thousands of vehicles travel it daily, Saturday night's accident is the first in recent years, according to Chief Bialkowski.
