Faced with stricter regulations from Ag and Markets, Schoharie County officials may ask the Animal Shelter of the Schoharie Valley for use of a building at the Howes Cave site.
Town dog control officers may soon be required to have power, water, and other services to their kennels where they house dogs temporarily.
Fulton Supervisor Phil Skowfoe suggested having the county pursue use of the second building at the animal shelter site through county attorney Mike West, who is also on the shelter board.
The shelter has a new building and is not using the old one. The old building, though, will need a good amount of work to be useful again, according to Mr. West. The building has mold and leaks.
If the county is willing to fix the old building, it is likely that shelter officials would be in favor of the proposal, Mr. West said.
The old shelter building could be used for DCOs to leave their dogs temporarily.
Middleburgh DCO Willie Karlau suggested that the county take over the costs for the old building and split that cost among the towns. Each town could have two spots for dogs.
Supervisors Friday agreed to have Mr. West pursue the proposal, and, if approved, have it go to committee.
If the county takes over the use of the old building, extra funding should be given to the shelter.
