Not so fast: Cobleskill pool hits another roadblock

Cobleskill needs to find relief from the heat elsewhere this summer. The village pool is unlikely to open.
Repairs to the pumphouse, which had kept the pool closed earlier this summer, were expected to be finished so that the pool could open this week for a shortened season But the pool liner tore when it was being filled.
Tension from the weight of the water caused the tear, Mayor Linda Holmes said. The rip is about 20 feet wide and 16 inches deep.
An estimate to repair the damage was $16,500, and village board members feel that may be too much to buy another season or two from the 14-year-old liner.
"Is it worth putting that kind of money in something that will last maybe two more years?" Mayor Holmes asked. "Probably not."
Although village board members haven't met to decide on keeping the pool closed this summer, Mayor Holmes said three trustees believe the pool shouldn't open.
Instead, the idea is to put the repair costs towards a new liner, which would be $85,000 to $100,000, Mayor Holmes said.
The village is looking into other options for a replacement liner and may borrow to pay for it.
"I think what we'll do is get all the glitches out and be ready for next season," Mayor Holmes said.
Work on the pumphouse, the major project, was just about finished. It cost $275,000.
