C-R to post survey on WAC

Cobleskill-Richmondville will offer an online survey to determine how residents feel about switching sports leagues.
School board members and administrators are considering moving C-R from the large-school Colonial Council to the smaller-school Western Athletic Conference next year.
"We've gotten a lot of feedback. Everyone seems to have an opinion," Superintendent Carl Mummenthey told the school board Monday night.
The idea of moving to the WAC surfaced in the spring. Supporters believe the Colonial is now more of a city league with larger schools than C-R, which would fit better in the more rural WAC.
Detractors feel moving to a smaller league is just lowering the bar to easier competition and sends the wrong message to kids.
Other issues are school rivalries, travel time and expense.
The survey should be on C-R's website by the end of this week.
Mr. Mummenthey admitted that the survey wouldn't be definitive but would give board members another avenue to test public sentiment.
"It's sort of a finger in the wind," Mr. Mummenthey said.
The survey will be short, he added, and will be online for about a week.
Meanwhile, C-R officials will see whether WAC schools have teams at the modified and junior varsity levels, another concern.
If the school board decides to switch, the move must be approved by WAC superintendents.
"Many [WAC] superintendents are receptive, but not all of them," Mr. Mummenthey said.
When asked by board President Bruce Tryon what the drop-dead date for a decision would be, Mr. Mummenthey said September "is a critical month."
Both leagues would have to know what C-R is doing early this year in order to begin scheduling sports for 2016-17.
Board members are expected to make a decision at their September 28 meeting.
