The new Save-A-Lot grocery opened to wire-to-wire throngs on Thursday.
Shoppers were lined up outside before the 8am opening of the store, which is in the former Rite Aid drug store on Main Street.
And when corporate officials and local leaders cut the ribbon, those shoppers crowded the aisles for opening-day deals.
Interest in the new store continued all day, with the parking lot full and cars overflowing into the NBT Bank lot next door.
"It's a very nice crowd," said Save-A-Lot Regional Manager March Schepers. "It's nice to see so many people turn out."
Not nearly as large as Price Chopper or Wal-Mart, the new market nonetheless has the same departments all groceries do: produce, meat, canned food, cleaning supplies and so forth.
As one Save-A-Lot spokesperson said when the store was announced in October, the market has "all you need to feed your family" but not wide selections of each item.
But the large chain--more than 1,300 stores--prides itself on low overhead and resulting low prices, that same spokesperson said.
Local officials were on hand for the ribbon-cutting, including Mayor Linda Holmes, Assemblyman Pete Lopez, county Administrator Steve Wilson and county Treasurer Bill Cherry.
"I'm excited," Mayor Holmes said. "I'm looking forward to having Save-A-Lot serve our community.
Village Codes Officer Mike Piccolo, also at the ribbon-cutting, had much to do with bringing Save-A-Lot to Cobleskill, Mayor Holmes said.
"He's the man who got it done," she said.
Crews began working on the former drug store as soon as Save-A-Lot announced plans in October. The store was scheduled then to be ready in February, and it opened on time.
Roger Mason, who's opened two or three other Save-A-Lots, will be the Cobleskill store manager, Mr. Schepers said.
