Berne man killed in "suicide by police"

A High Point Road man who charged State Troopers while holding two knives was shot and killed by police late Friday night.
An Albany County coroner ruled the death a "suicide by police," according to police.
At about 11:30pm Friday, Troopers responded to High Point Road in the Town of Berne after an initial report was received.
High Point Road is located off Huntersland Road in Albany County, just outside Schoharie County.
After they received a report of a man threatening to shoot anyone who approached him, specifically any responding law enforcement, they arrived on the scene and located a man walking along the road. Troopers said they noticed that the man, later identified as Carl Baranishyn Jr., 51, was carrying a folding knife in each hand. Mr. Baranishyn apparently called police saying he felt suicidal and homicidal.
Mr. Baranishyn refused to comply with numerous verbal commands to drop the knives, later described as being between three and four inches each, and then "aggressively approached" the Troopers, according to police.
Both Troopers fired from their issued duty weapons. Mr. Baranishyn was shot three times from about 10 to 15 feet away, police added. Officials declined to say where on his body Mr. Baranishyn was shot.
Immediate first aid was given to Mr. Baranishyn by the Troopers after he no longer posed a threat to them, police said. This included the Troopers using an AED to treat his injuries followed by Helderberg Rescue squad personnel continuing to render medical assistance after they arrived on the scene.
The life-saving efforts were unsuccessful and Mr. Baranishyn, who appeared to live alone, died from his injuries, according to police.
The investigation into the incident is continuing by the State Police in conjunction with the Albany County District Attorney's office. The names of the Troopers involved are not being released at this time as it is an ongoing investigation, police said.
The Albany County Sheriff's office also responded to the scene and assisted, but was not involved in the shooting.
