Memorial Day services far and wide

Communities around the T-J area will observe Memorial Day with ceremonies and parades.

SCHOHARIE

Schoharie's Memorial Day parade will be at 6:30pm Thursday.
The grand marshal for the parade is the Town of Wright/Schoharie Lions Club.
After the parade, a short Memorial Day ceremony will be in Veterans' Park at the corner of Main and Spring Streets.
Grand marshal presentations and parade awards will follow.

COBLESKILL

Cobleskill will observe Memorial Day with a parade starting at 9:30am on Monday.
Because of the Main Street construction, the parade will start on MacArthur Avenue and end at Centre Park.
A ceremony in the park will follow the parade.

MIDDLEBURGH

Middleburgh's Memorial Day ceremony will begin at 10am Monday in Memorial Park on Main Street.
Boy and Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts and Brownies, and Vicki Hoerz' third-grade class will be taking part.
There will be a wreath-laying ceremony with members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion. The ceremony will end with the laying of 'Taps.'
The Century Club and Women's Cooperative Club will provide cookies and punch.

SHARON

In Sharon Springs, the parade will begin at 11am Monday with music provided by the Sharon Springs Central School marching band.
After the parade, a memorial ceremony will be conducted in front of the monument at the school. The guest speaker will be Peter Lindemann, who portrays President Abe Lincoln at many events.


WORCESTER

Worcester's parade will start at 10am Monday at the school and march on Main and
Cook streets to reach Maple Grove Cemetery.
There will be a short service, including the raising of the flag, a message by Rev. Daniel Martin and the placing of wreaths.
The parade will regroup and march to the Veterans' Memorial on the lawn of the bank. A program here will end with the playing of 'Taps.'
Worcester's award-winning school band will be participating.

OLD STONE FORT

The Old Stone Fort in Schoharie will hold its traditional Decoration Day on the actual Memorial Day holiday, Monday, May 30.
The observance begins at 1pm, with members of the Schoharie County American Legion laying wreaths in front of the Memorials on the lawn of the fort.
At 2pm, the 77th New York Balladeers will present a film and music tribute to the American citizen soldier in the Badgley Museum Annex. Also available will be guided tours of the Old Stone Fort Cemetery.
At about 3:30, a traditional Decoration Day observance will re-create the post-Civil War ceremony conducted by the Corporal James Tanner Chapter of the Sons of Union Veterans. This includes a procession of all participants and the public through the cemetery. They will decorate the graves of all Civil War soldiers with flowers from a hand-drawn carriage.
The day's activities end with a military retreat ceremony followed by 'Taps.'
